The Cabbage story

A while ago, I bought some rice paper sheets with the idea to make some dumplings for the family. When the time came, I pulled up a simple recipe and asked my host mom to add cabbage to the next grocery list. She responded with, "cabbage? I don't think I've ever bought cabbage. How do you cook it?....Maybe put it in soup or something?"

I just had to laugh. I didn't think "chou" was so foreign here. I mean, we do border with Germany. Aka sauerkraut!

She went to the store and couldn't find some so I paid a trip to the market. After searching through every produce stand, I finally found a head of cabbage in the corner! As I marched back home, up the many hills, cabbage in hand, I was quite the spectacle. An old man even commented saying, "c'est bon, ca!"

Well, the dumplings were a HUGE hit with the parents eating them and the kids making them. It was great! We've even done it a second night the following week.

“Oh, London is a man's town, there's power in the air;
And Paris is a woman's town, with flowers in her hair;
And it's sweet to dream in Venice, and it's great to study Rome;
But when it comes to living, there is no place like home.”
