New Kidz on the Block

National Neighbor Day in France was last friday and, per tradition, my neighborhood threw another awesome block party (reference the Halloween party).

I'm surprised how fast the time flew by but from 7 to 12 I was out there hanging with the English speakers (phew!) and trying to dance with a broken back and refusing the many offers to have a glass of wine and eating what was gluten free (well, not totally to my regret) and chatting with a wild-party British girl who was kind of corrupting the innocent mind of my little 13 year old. Long night!

Many a times I am asked to explain why I don't drink. While I don't usually go into full detail of why I don't drink, I rarely use the "religion" card because it really is a personal choice, regardless of what the church says. I love my life without alcohol in it!

The French parents are crazy partiers. I kind of love it. They certainly know how to let loose and dance without shame and they are very flirty with everyone- married or not! To be honest, I couldn't keep the couples straight because everyone was dancing with everyone. Hahaha. Oh, to be a French person.

While I checked in "early", the blasting music went on for a few more hours after I called it quits. The British au pair, Ellie, was a crack-up to talk to. She definitely is a party animal so we didn't see eye-to-eye on a few different subjects but I was happy to have someone to talk to! It's funny being an au pair because, if there's no other au pairs, you fall into the weird middle zone of not being a little kid and not being a French adult. It's a weird territory to navigate.

“Oh, London is a man's town, there's power in the air;
And Paris is a woman's town, with flowers in her hair;
And it's sweet to dream in Venice, and it's great to study Rome;
But when it comes to living, there is no place like home.”
